YFG Fatso has a story to tell before \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/open.spotify.com\/album\/5CkmOdUGDcPcdJvH3sVcIv\">Sanity Evaded<\/a>\u201d even begins. Born 2007 in Chicago, the young man was the right age in the right place for the rise of drill music, and it shouldn\u2019t be surprising that he looked up to the likes of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rapreviews.com\/2016\/01\/chief-keef-nobody\/\">Chief Keef<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rapreviews.com\/2019\/08\/lil-durk-love-songs-4-the-streets-2\/\">Lil Durk<\/a> as he sought his own break in rap. In 2023 got that break by signing with Durk\u2019s OTF (Only the Family) and dropping the single \u201cScarFace,\u201d which took him from an aspiring regional rapper to one with a much bigger reach. Unfortunately Durk\u2019s fame has been both a blessing <a href=\"https:\/\/fox4kc.com\/news\/national\/rapper-lil-durk-arrested-on-murder-for-hire-charges-affiliates-of-his-rap-group-also-charged\/\">and a curse<\/a>.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<div class=\"cb-video-frame\">\n<div class=\"fluid-width-video-wrapper\"><iframe id=\"fitvid0\" title=\"YFG Fatso - They Need Me (feat. Tee Grizzley) [Official Audio]\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/nXw0GvAuXOM?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\" data-mce-fragment=\"1\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p>With his mentor facing trial on a murder-for-hire charge, and that trial <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Lil_Durk_murder-for-hire_trial\">expected to start<\/a> two days after this review, it can hardly come as a surprise that \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/open.spotify.com\/album\/5CkmOdUGDcPcdJvH3sVcIv\">Sanity Evaded<\/a>\u201d seems to be creating distance between Durk and Fatso. There\u2019s no mention of OTF when you look at the album \u2014 just Fatso himself and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.santaannarecords.com\/\">Santa Anna Records<\/a>, a label imprint under Sony Music. Of course there\u2019s no official confirmation that the two have parted ways, but if Fatso wants his career to continue, he can\u2019t go all in with his chips on someone else\u2019s cards hoping they win big. Are there any cameos from Durk on the 16 songs and 44 minutes of this album? No \u2014 and I didn\u2019t expect any. Both men have to handle their own business.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cRisk and then we\u2019ll reap, and we don\u2019t sleep<br \/>\n\u2019til all eat, this more than fast money\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<div class=\"cb-video-frame\">\n<div class=\"fluid-width-video-wrapper\"><iframe id=\"fitvid0\" title=\"YFG Fatso - Ain't I (Official Music Video) [Shot By @Rxllo]\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/doPnqhjtGFs?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\" data-mce-fragment=\"1\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p>Durk\u2019s trial is far from his only concern. Fatso had his first daughter at only 16 years old, and \u201cAin\u2019t I\u201d makes it clear what he\u2019s thinking about. <em>\u201cI just grind to feed my kid.\u201d<\/em> The ominous 905 beat (that\u2019s the name of a producer, not a sampler, just so you know) provides all the ammunition this driller needs. Most of the time his vocals are straight up and down, but \u201cP E R C O S E T S\u201d seems aptly named given the heavy AutoTune usage. It\u2019s hard to avoid the fact that the more recreational drugs young rap artists consume, the more comfortable they become with that Tune, as though singing becomes easier than spitting bars. For someone who grew up not being able to sing I felt like the opposite was true.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<div class=\"cb-video-frame\">\n<div class=\"fluid-width-video-wrapper\"><iframe id=\"fitvid0\" title=\"YFG Fatso - P E R C O S E T S [Official Audio]\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/xaN07V8BgKQ?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\" data-mce-fragment=\"1\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p>The affection Fatso has for Chicago is a huge plus on songs like the SarKay laced \u201cCome Home.\u201d Fatso couldn\u2019t wait to get the hell out of Cali in the song, even though he <em>\u201cgrew up the bad way\u201d<\/em> and <em>\u201cdidn\u2019t care what my dad say.\u201d<\/em> It\u2019s understandable given his pops was locked up by Fatso\u2019s own admission. You might wonder why someone making Chicago drill would be so fond of it given the prevalent violence, but as the old saying goes, pressure makes diamonds. If you can survive to make it in rap music you\u2019ve got something to be proud of. Besides between us I think Chicago gets a bad name when the violence endemic to it isn\u2019t exactly unique compared to any large metropolitan area in America.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<div class=\"cb-video-frame\">\n<div class=\"fluid-width-video-wrapper\"><iframe id=\"fitvid0\" title=\"YFG Fatso - Come Home (Official Music Video)\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/2DTwc9sI1w0?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\" data-mce-fragment=\"1\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p>The most surprising thing about Fatso might be that he has a spiritual side. ProdbyLeak gives Fatso a soft piano melody to offer prayers to the heavens on \u201cHelp Me Jesus,\u201d where he confesses his sins and admits <em>\u201cI do what I want, I\u2019m a savage\u201d<\/em> even while he obviously wants more. You can hear a choir in the background at times and they try to lead him to the path of enlightenment. <em>\u201cTears fall out my eyes, why am I around? I got low self-esteem.\u201d<\/em> Now that\u2019s the kind of brutal honesty listeners can relate to.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<div class=\"cb-video-frame\">\n<div class=\"fluid-width-video-wrapper\"><iframe id=\"fitvid0\" title=\"YFG Fatso - Help Me Jesus [Official Audio]\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/S-z6GHKvjqI?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\" data-mce-fragment=\"1\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p>So yes \u2014 when YFG Fatso says he doesn\u2019t need to be on drugs to make good music on \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/open.spotify.com\/album\/5CkmOdUGDcPcdJvH3sVcIv\">Sanity Evaded<\/a>,\u201d I believe him. I\u2019m not even 100 that he needed Durk to get where he is right now. Does he embody a lot of the tropes of the drill genre? By choice. Does he sing more than he needs to? At times. Do I see there\u2019s more to the man than surface level appearances? Definitely. He tries to hide his true self at times through bragging about having an AK in his pants and talking down on his opps, but this is a young man with a daughter to take care of and a lot to live for, and that comes out in his songs even when he\u2019s trying to posture for his audience. Fatso is not my first choice for a rap <em>nom de plume<\/em> but I think he\u2019ll be alright.
